Stricter Road Safety Rules in Japan: Mandatory Alcohol Check for Employees

A company making use of vehicles by its employees, officers etc. for business purposes is required to appoint a “safe driving manager” (“SDM“) under the Road Traffic Act of Japan (“RTA“) if the number of vehicles exceeds certain thresholds as described below. Under a recent amendment to the Enforcement Regulations for RTA (“RTA Regulations“), effective since 1 April 2022, a series of new duties have been imposed upon the SDM in relation to controlling and confirming the alcohol level of drivers using vehicles for business.
